Farwalk (“the app”) is made by an individual developer. The developer runs no server that stores your personal data. Everything below describes what stays on your iPhone, what goes through your own iCloud account when you choose to walk with someone, and the small set of anonymous events used to improve the app.
Farwalk reads your walking and running distance (and, for display only, your step count) from Apple Health to move you along the journeys you create. This data stays on your device. Farwalk never sends Health data to the developer or to any third party, never uses it for advertising, and never writes anything to Apple Health.
The starting point and destination of a journey (names and coordinates) are stored on your device. Your current location is used only once, when you choose “Use my location” to set a starting point, and is not tracked afterwards or uploaded.
If you choose “Pick from Contacts” to use a friend’s address as a destination, Farwalk opens the system contact picker and reads only the address you select. Your contacts are not scanned, stored, or uploaded. The selected address becomes an ordinary destination on your device (and is shared as such only if you later share that journey, see below).
You can set a display name and a profile photo. Both are stored on your device. They are shown to another person only inside a journey you share with that person (see below). Photos you attach to a journey as its cover are stored on your device only and are never uploaded. Farwalk uses the system photo picker and does not access your photo library beyond the pictures you pick.
If you choose to walk a journey together with someone, Farwalk stores that journey in your own iCloud account using Apple’s CloudKit and shares it, via a link you send, only with the person you invite. Both participants can see: the journey’s name, its start and end points, each participant’s display name and profile photo, each participant’s distance walked today and in total, each participant’s total step count on that journey, and the cheers (small reactions) you send each other. What is not shared: your day-by-day step history, your location, your contacts, your cover photos, or any Health data beyond those distances. The developer runs no server of their own and cannot read shared journeys. Sharing requires an iCloud account signed in on your iPhone; no Farwalk account is created. You can stop sharing at any time by leaving or deleting the journey.
Notifications (for example when your partner joins, sends a cheer, or you complete a journey) are created on your device. Farwalk does not use a push server.
To improve the app, Farwalk sends a small number of anonymous events to the developer’s server, such as “a journey was started”, “a journey was completed”, “the plans screen was shown”, “a share was created”, or “a profile photo was set” — for a started or completed journey, also its total length rounded to whole kilometers and its category (for example “landmarks” or “custom”), but never its places — together with the app version, OS version, language, a random identifier generated on the device (it disappears when you delete the app), and the country of connection (IP addresses are not stored).
The following are never sent: place names or coordinates, the distance you have walked or your step counts, Health data, your location, contacts, your name or photos, email addresses, the advertising identifier (IDFA) or the device identifier (IDFV), or IP addresses. These events are not used for advertising and are not shared with data brokers; no third-party analytics SDK is included.
You can turn this off at any time in Settings › “Share anonymous usage”. Turning it off also deletes any events not yet sent.
Purchases are made through Apple’s App Store. The developer does not receive your name or payment details.
Photos of destinations are bundled with the app (Wikimedia Commons, under free licenses; credits are listed in Settings). They are not downloaded while you use the app.
